No Hint of Help

This video piece was created for NACHMO during the month of January 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. I filmed it in the entrance to my one bedroom apartment, in a costume that evokes Martha Graham’s Lamentation. I am about 8 months pregnant with my second daughter.

The dance is a response to the predicament in which the Millennial generation finds itself. We are the highest educated generation in American history and yet the lowest paid. We graduated first into the crash of 2008 and now face the fallout from the pandemic. Again and again we find we need to move home to live with parents, to delay life milestones like marriage, children, or home buying, and we have no career mobility or agency.

Using a self-designed audio score that highlights news reports, a poetic response to Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, and my own reminiscences, No Hint of Help is intentionally bleak. How will this generation rise above the circumstances handed to them? It is yet to be seen.
