Choreography Devices Workshop
June 14, 10:15am-1:15pm
Aurora Hills Library, Crystal City, VA
FREE!
Join SCDP in welcoming DC’s May Kesler as she leads a workshop in Choreography Devices from Doug Varone! We will play and find our way guided by Kesler, a physical therapist and dancer/choreographer. She will lead the group in using delightful games that create unique movement and new dances, all collated from various experiences studying under Varone. In fact, just the week prior to this event, May will travel to NYC to study under Varone, and will bring back some wonderful experiences for us! The workshop will start with a contemporary warmup, then explore the games, using props, writing, and possibly Tarot as well, to create and share dances. After the workshop time, we plan to invite people to an open and free performance of our improvisations. So bring your friends, dancers or not!
Workshop: 10:15-12:30 (library opens at 10)
Performance: 12:45-1:15 (all wrapped up by 1:30)

Contact Improvisation Basics: Learning to Share
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a partner dance form based on following a shared point of contact in the moment. There are many ways to find, follow, and use that point of contact. This workshop introduces some history of CI and gives the opportunity to learn the basics of weight sharing. This is appropriate for anyone who wants to explore weight sharing within a structured space.
CREATIVE MOVEMENT
For eight weeks, children will experience a range of movement and composition elements, including but not limited to: fast/slow, high/low, positive/negative space, and improvisation. Emphasis is placed on exploration and personal expression rather than learning “steps.” Each time slot is limited to 8 children, and will be canceled if fewer than 4 children sign up.
It is possible to pay for drop-in classes all at once or individually each week of participation. You will be sent the address for class upon registration.
ADULT BALLET
Enjoy ballet at home! This is an open, all-levels experience. The class will focus on bar work, either standing or on the floor. If you don’t have a ballet bar at home, no worries! A high-backed chair will work wonders. You can choose to have your camera on or off, as personal enjoyment is the highest priority.
