February Fun (and beyond)

SCDP will be performing and then hosting some dance events in February! Here are the details:

NACHMO Showcase

February 15, 7:30 pm
Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H St NE Washington, DC 20002
Tickets here

SCDP is debuting “The Debate,” a new quartet, at Atlas Intersections Festival 2025. Produced by Glade Dance Collective, this collaborative show features selections from DMV choreographers all created during the month of January (an event called NACHMO).

“The Debate” is presented as a first response to the current political climate. I am inspired by the iconic work “The Green Table,” by Kurt Jooss, which positioned political debate as back room deals that only furthered death and destruction among the general populace. He premiered this ballet in 1932 and unfortunately, it is still poignant today. My interest is to further the discussion on what is power and how is it wielded today, and how the illusion of control manifests in the face of all of our certain deaths. But there are masks, cool costumes, and one audience member said it reminded them of WWE, so it’s not all super heavy!

Choreography Devices Workshop

February 23, 3-6 pm
Sherwood Library, First Floor Meeting Room
2501 Sherwood Hall Ln, Alexandria, VA 22306
FREE!

Join SCDP in welcoming DC’s May Kesler as she leads a workshop in Choreography Devices from Doug Varone! We will play and find our way guided by Kesler, a physical therapist and dancer/choreographer. She will lead the group in using delightful games that create unique movement and new dances, all collated from various experiences studying under Varone. Hone your craft as a choreographer or try your hand at it! We will start with a contemporary warmup, then explore the games, using props, writing, and possibly Tarot as well, to create and share dances.

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a partner dance form based on following a shared point of contact in the moment. There are many ways to find, follow, and use that point of contact. This workshop will introduce some history of CI and give the opportunity to learn the basics of weight sharing. This is appropriate for anyone who wants to explore weight sharing within a structured space.
