Performance synopsis:
“Color in Motion: Be Moved” is a new collaborative performance experience that blends contemporary dance, immersive colorfield art, and live music into a joyful, participatory
event for all ages at Look! Arlington’s Community Arts program. The project brings together Arlington-based colorfield artist and educator Barbara Januszkiewicz, Fairfax-based Small Creatures Dance Project, and improvising musician Ted Zook.
For this project, SCDP responds directly to Januszkiewicz’s color language—wrapping, unfurling, and transforming the artwork as they move through the room, inviting audiences to see dance as a form of painting in time. In this special engagement, Januszkiewicz’s luminous colorfields move off the wall and into the space—draped on dancers, carried as sculptural props, and echoed in the visual environment as a shifting backdrop of color, light, and motion. As the dancers move, they “paint” the air with Barbara’s layered hues, creating a living, breathing colorfield that celebrates lyrical joy, connection, and the shared energy of community.
In the spirit of LOOK Arlington’s mission to transform space through unexpected art encounters, “Color in Motion: Be Moved” is designed not just to be watched, but also gently joined. During the improvisational performance, dancers will invite audience participation as they infuse the space with Barbara’s art. Audience members may be invited to hold and interact with parts of the costumes and props, becoming part of the art as the performers paint the space. Visitors of all ages and abilities can feel how movement, color, and music come together, creating joy and connection.
